1 lakh rupees for a cup of chai: This cafe by an Indian-origin woman in Dubai serves gold karak tea

For a cup of masala chai, how much would you spend? Ten rupees? Perhaps thirty? If you’re at a posh cafe, it may be as much as ₹300. However, to sample gold tea, which is served in pure silver teacups with 24 carat gold leaf on top, individuals in Dubai are spending the equivalent of ₹1 lakh.

Gold karak’ tea is the creation of Indian-origin Sucheta Sharma, owner of Boho Cafe. Since its opening last month at the DIFC’s Emirates Financial Towers, the cafe has drawn notice online for its unique products, which include tea with gold leaf and croissants coated with gold.

The cafe offers two menu options. Tourists have the choice of enjoying its more upscale selections or its more reasonably priced Indian street cuisine options. Boho Cafe owner Sucheta Sharma told Khaleej Times, “We wanted to create something extraordinary for those seeking indulgence while also catering to the wider community.”

The cost of gold karak tea is 5,000 AED, or roughly ₹1.1 lakh. The price of gold coffee at Dubai’s Boho Cafe is comparable. Visitors can retain and take home the gold-dusted croissant and silverware that accompany each drink.

On the other hand, guests can choose for gold tea without the silver cups if they want a taste of gold without breaking the wallet. They would have to pay 150 AED (about ₹3,500) for this.

Social media users’ opinions on the menu are split; some describe it as a “nice experience,” while others claim it’s a waste of money. One Instagram user questioned, “Now why in the world would I want to eat gold in my coffee and croissant?” Another joked, “Do I have to declare this to customs before I board a flight?”
