2024 was India’s hottest year, says Meteorological Department

2024 was India’s hottest year. 2024 was the hottest year in India since 1901. The average minimum temperature in 2024 was 0.90 degrees Celsius above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department.

In a press conference held through Avasi, Director General of the India Meteorological Department Dr. Mrutnjay Mohapatra said that in 2024 alone, the annual average land air temperature across India was 0.65 degrees Celsius higher than the long-term average. This also surpassed the 2016 temperature record. The average temperature in 2016 was recorded at 0.54 degrees Celsius above normal, making 2024 the hottest year since 1901. Not only in India but also in the European climate agency ‘Copernicus’, 2024 was probably the warmest year on record.

A joint review by the World Meteorological Attribution and Climate Central has shown that in 2024, the world saw an average of 41 additional days of extreme heat compared to previous years. Last November was also very hot. Usually, winter starts before November, but this time it was not so cold. The Meteorological Department said that this is the second hottest November since 1901. At that time, the average maximum temperature was recorded at 29.37 degrees Celsius, which was 0.623 degrees higher than the season’s normal temperature (28.75 degrees). Similarly, last October was also the hottest since 1901. The Meteorological Department said that the average temperature in that month was recorded 1.23 degrees higher than normal.
