Before knowing about the Oscar trophy, it is important to know some things about this event. The world’s first Oscar award event was organized on 16 May 1929. It was organized at the Roosevelt Hotel in California. This award is also called the Academy Award of Merit. The idea of making this trophy was raised two years before this event.
Oscars statue , Who designed the trophy?
In the year 1927, the design of the trophy was discussed for the first time in the meeting of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. During this time, many artists of Los Angeles were asked to present their designs. Out of all the beautiful sculptures, the sculpture made by sculptor George Stanley was liked, and thus the world got its Oscar trophy.
According to reports, the inspiration for the trophy given in the Oscar Awards was Mexican filmmaker and actor Emilio Fernandez. It is believed that Fernandez is behind this statue and this is his picture, which Stanley gave the form of a statue. Born in Coahuila, Mexico in 1904, Emilio grew up during the Mexican Revolution. Fernandez, a high school dropout, became an officer of the Huertista rebels. He was also sentenced, but he fled from there. After this, Fernandez started doing extra work in Hollywood. Here he was named ‘El Indio’ by silent film star Dolores del Rio.
And that pose became iconic…
The actress became good friends with Rio. Rio was the wife of Cedric Gibbons, the art director of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios and a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Del Rio introduced Fernandez to Gibbons, who was working on the design of the statue. Gibbons asked Fernandez to pose for a sketch that was the basis for the trophy weighing 8.5 pounds. Fernandez reluctantly posed and it became an iconic pose. George Stanley designed it and it was the trophy that was presented at the first Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles in 1929. Hence, Fernandez is considered to be the man behind this Oscar trophy.
According to the rules of Oscar, the Oscar winner does not have full ownership of his trophy. The winner cannot sell the trophy anywhere else even if he wants to. If a winner wants to sell this trophy, then first of all it has to be sold to the Academy that gives this trophy. The Academy will buy this trophy for only 1 dollar. Therefore, the price of this trophy is considered to be one dollar. However, if we talk about the cost of making it, then it costs a lot.
