What were the terms of the Simla Agreement?
According to the Simla Agreement, India released 93,000 Pakistani prisoners of war (POWs) who had surrendered to liberate Bangladesh after the 1971 war. It also stipulated that relations between India and Pakistan would be governed by the United Nations Charter. Any differences would be resolved peacefully and through bilateral negotiations, and no matter between the two countries would be referred to a third forum. Both countries would respect each other’s territorial integrity and would not interfere in each other’s internal affairs. After the 1971 war, troops would be withdrawn from each other’s side of the international border. The ceasefire line would be respected after 17 December 1971 and the Bangladesh War. The agreement also contained some other provisions, such as the restoration of communications, telegraph, postal, and air links.
