Biryani has taken the top spot on the list of favorite foods of Indians. It has become the most favorite food of people in the country for the last 9 years. This year, Biryani is the most ordered food in the country. In 2024, 2 biryanis were ordered every second and 158 per minute. With a total of 8.3 crore orders in 2024, Biryani has taken the number one spot on the list of most ordered foods on online food platforms. Imagine the interest in Biryani; how many people must have eaten at various roadside food courts, restaurants, and hotels apart from online? And the report also revealed that Biryani is the most favorite food of train passengers. A box of Biryani can be easily eaten by holding it in your hand. Rice, roti, dal, and vegetables are not included. Can this be said to be a culturally significant food? Because everyone has accepted it and made it their own food. And sometimes they eat it for brunch, sometimes for lunch and dinner. Of course, there is a lot of variety in it too, which shows the uniqueness of the region.
However, the South Indian masala dosa has not lost its appeal. It is in second place in the list of most ordered. Masala dosa was ordered by 2.3 crore people in the year 2024. And Bengaluru people have ordered the most. Between January 1, 2024, and November 22, people there have ordered about 2.5 lakh dosas. This is known from the records of online food delivery service company Swiggy. Apart from that, it is possible to guess how many orders other companies are also taking.
Experts often warn about what to eat and when to eat it. They say that burgers, pizzas, etc. are harmful. However, all those foods are on the list of choices of the youth. Chicken burgers have become the most favorite food of the people between 12 am and 2 am. About 18.4 lakh orders were placed for chicken burgers during the late night. Similarly, chole, aloo paratha, kachori, etc. have been ordered more in Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata. Delhi has even spent about 60 crores on ordering instant noodles. Orders for potato chips have also increased.
Among the desserts, Rasmalai and Sitaphal ice cream are at the forefront. Chicken rolls are the most popular snack with 24.8 lakh orders. Chicken momos are in second place with 16.3 lakh orders, and potato fries are in third place with 1.3 lakh orders. This year, dinner orders on Swiggy were about 21.5 crore. Which is 29% more than lunch.
Some other highlights of the report reveal that Swiggy Instamart saw a surge in orders for milk, curd, dosa batter, chips, healthy drinks, and even onions, fruits, and vegetables. 273 chocolates were ordered every minute on Rakshi. 8 lakh Rakshis were delivered. Swiggy reported that users spent more than Rs 45 lakh.
Swiggy’s delivery partners have travelled a total of 1.96 billion kilometers in the year. This is equivalent to travelling from Kashmir to Kanyakumari 5.33 lakh times. Kapil Kumar Pandey from Mumbai is the best performer with 10,703 deliveries. And Kalishwari M from Coimbatore is at the top among women partners with 6,658 orders delivered. Overall, Swiggy has done well and has also provided employment to many children as delivery partners. But this report gives a clear picture of the food taste and food habits of Indians. Which is really interesting.
