According to the approved schedule, the Budget Session will be held in two phases. The first phase will begin on January 28, 2026, and conclude on February 13, 2026. After this, Parliament will go into recess, during which parliamentary standing committees will examine the demands for grants of various ministries and departments.
Parliament will reconvene for the second phase of the Budget Session on March 9, 2026. This phase will focus on detailed discussions, consideration, and passage of the budgetary proposals and related legislation. The entire session will formally conclude on April 2, 2026.
With February 1 falling on a Sunday in 2026, there has been speculation regarding the date of the presentation of the Union Budget. However, based on the session schedule and past practice, it is widely expected that the Union Budget will still be presented on February 1, 2026, by the Finance Minister.
The government has described the division of the Budget Session into two phases as an important step towards ensuring orderly parliamentary functioning, meaningful debate, and people-centered governance. The second phase of the session, beginning March 9, will be particularly significant for finalizing budgetary allocations and economic priorities.
With the President’s approval, the schedule for the most important parliamentary session of 2026 has now been finalized. The Budget Session, starting January 28, is expected to set the direction for the country’s economic policies, fiscal planning, and legislative work in the coming year.
