US Sends Military Aircraft to Greenland Base Amid Trump’s Acquisition Push: The United States military has deployed aircraft to Greenland’s Pitufik Space Base amid growing political tensions over former President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring the self-governed Danish territory. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said the deployment was part of pre-planned military activities and carried out in close coordination with Denmark.
In a post on X, the US-Canadian defense organization stated, “Aircraft from the North American Aerospace Defense Command will soon arrive at Pitufik Space Base in Greenland.” NORAD emphasized that the movement of aircraft was routine and aimed at strengthening defense cooperation among the United States, Canada, and Denmark.
According to NORAD, Denmark and Greenland were fully informed in advance of the operations, and all forces involved are operating with proper diplomatic clearance. The aircraft will support routine dispersed operations designed to bolster the defense of North America.
Pitufik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Force Base, is a key US military installation located in northwestern Greenland. The base plays a crucial role in missile warning, space surveillance, and strategic communications.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has once again come into focus following remarks by President Donald Trump, who has argued that the island is critical to US national security. Trump has cited Greenland’s strategic Arctic location, its vast mineral resources, and growing concerns about Russian and Chinese activity in the region. Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any proposal to transfer sovereignty, reiterating that the island is not for sale.
Military Activity Increases in Greenland Amid US-Denmark Political Tensions
Amid these developments, Denmark has also stepped up its military presence on the Arctic island. Media reports indicate that several aircraft carrying Danish troops and military equipment landed in Greenland on Monday, increasing the number of forces already stationed there. The Danish Defence Forces confirmed that a significant contingent of troops, along with the country’s army chief, has been deployed to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq.
The troop deployments follow a multinational military exercise led by Danish forces over the weekend, reflecting heightened security concerns in the Arctic region. Tensions escalated further after President Trump did not rule out the use of force to gain control of Greenland, reinforcing worries in Copenhagen and Nuuk.
While US and Danish officials maintain that the current military movements are defensive and routine, the parallel buildup by both countries underscores the growing strategic importance of Greenland amid intensifying global competition in the Arctic involving Russia and China.
