IMD Issues Rain Alert for 9 States; Strong Winds and Temperature Rise Expected
IMD Issues 4-Day Rain Alert: Expected in Odisha Tamil Nadu, Kerala: As the country prepares for the onset of summer, an unexpected shift in weather patterns has brought rain and storm warnings across several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for moderate to heavy rainfall in nine states over the next four days starting February 21, urging residents and farmers to stay cautious.
According to the IMD, strong winds ranging between 40–45 km/h could accompany the rainfall, potentially disrupting normal life. The impact is expected to be more noticeable in parts of North India and hilly regions, where travelers are advised to check updated forecasts before planning their journeys.
States Under Rain Alert
The nine states and regions likely to witness rainfall in the coming hours include:
- Jammu and Kashmir
- Himachal Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- Tamil Nadu
- Kerala
- Chhattisgarh
- Odisha
- Karnataka
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Light rain and snowfall are expected in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on February 22 and 23, while Uttarakhand may experience similar conditions between February 22 and 24.
Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh and Odisha are likely to receive rainfall on February 23 and 24. Southern states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala may witness heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 35–45 km/h on February 21 and 22.
Temperature Outlook
While rainfall cools several regions, parts of western India may see rising temperatures. Maximum temperatures in Gujarat and Maharashtra are expected to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, signaling the gradual approach of summer.
Advisory for Farmers and Travelers
The IMD has specifically advised farmers to take precautions to protect standing crops from unseasonal rain and strong winds. Travelers heading to hilly areas are also encouraged to monitor weather updates closely to avoid inconvenience.
