IndiGo Launches Kolkata-Shanghai Flights as Connectivity Improves
Flights Between India and China Resume After Years of Disruption: Air connectivity between India and China is steadily returning to normal after years of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged diplomatic tensions. The revival of flight operations is being seen as a positive step toward strengthening trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Several airlines have announced new routes and the resumption of previously suspended services. IndiGo has launched daily flights between Kolkata and Shanghai starting March 29, marking a significant milestone in reconnecting the two regions.
Meanwhile, China Southern Airlines is planning to introduce a new service connecting Guangzhou and Delhi in the upcoming summer or autumn season. China Eastern Airlines has announced the resumption of direct flights between Kunming and Kolkata from April 18.
In another key development, Air China is set to launch a direct flight service between Beijing and Delhi starting April 21.
These developments indicate practical steps toward improving bilateral ties despite ongoing political challenges. The resumption of air routes is expected to provide a significant boost to economic cooperation and regional development, particularly in eastern and northeastern India.
At the inauguration of the IndiGo 6E service, India’s Consul General in Shanghai highlighted the importance of enhanced connectivity for strengthening economic relations. The Indian Embassy also described the move as a positive signal for expanding engagement between India and China.
Notably, flight services between the two countries had only resumed in October last year after a five-year suspension, making the current expansion an important step toward normalization.
