West Bengal Re-Polling Announced for 15 Polling Booths After April 29 Voting Irregularities
Bengal Re-Polling Scheduled for 15 Booths on May 2, Voting from 7 AM to 6 PM
: In a significant development, the Election Commission of India has announced re-polling for 15 polling booths in the South 24 Parganas district on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm at 11 polling booths in Magrahat West and 4 booths in Diamond Harbour. The decision to hold a re-poll follows complaints of irregularities during the April 29th voting in these areas. Reports from returning officers and election observers led to the cancellation of the vote at these specific booths.
The Election Commission had earlier received demands for re-polling across 77 polling booths in the district. However, only 15 booths will undergo re-polling, with no official confirmation yet about the remaining 62 booths. The re-polling decision was made under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, in response to reported issues and disturbances during the initial vote.
Incidents of violence were also reported during the April 29th voting, particularly in Basanti, where BJP candidate Vikas Sardar was attacked. His vehicle was vandalized, and there were allegations of attempts to snatch weapons from his security personnel. Despite the presence of central forces, reports indicate that security did not intervene to control the situation. This attack further fueled tensions in the region, leading to calls for action and the eventual decision to re-poll at the affected booths.
