M. K. Stalin Resigns After DMK’s Shock Defeat in Tamil Nadu Polls: Following a significant electoral defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, M. K. Stalin resigned as Chief Minister, accepting the mandate delivered by voters. His resignation was submitted to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar shortly after results confirmed the loss of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The election saw a dramatic rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay Kumar, which delivered a stunning performance in its debut.
Despite the defeat, Stalin expressed gratitude to the electorate, emphasizing that the DMK alliance secured over 15.48 million votes. He noted that the vote difference between the DMK and the winning party was relatively narrow—just 1.743 million votes, or about 3.52 percent. In a message shared on social media, Stalin reassured party workers that the DMK has endured both victories and defeats in its political journey and would continue to stand firm in serving the people, now from the opposition benches.
The election results marked a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK winning 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling just short of a majority. The DMK was reduced to 59 seats, while other major parties also saw declines. In a major upset, Stalin himself lost the Kolathur constituency to TVK candidate VS Babu by 8,795 votes. With no clear majority, TVK is expected to seek alliances with smaller parties to form the next government, signaling a new era of coalition politics in the state.
