Unlike normal knockout matches, not every IPL playoff game leads to immediate elimination. The IPL playoff format gives an extra advantage to the teams finishing in the top two positions in the league table. That is why today’s losing team will not be knocked out of the tournament.
Qualifier 1 is played between the top two teams of the league stage. The winner goes straight to the final, while the losing team moves to Qualifier 2. There, they will face the winner of the Eliminator match, which is played between the third and fourth-placed teams.
This rule was introduced to reward teams that performed consistently well throughout the league stage. It ensures that a top-performing team does not get eliminated after just one bad match. Because of this advantage, every team aims to finish in the top two positions before the playoffs begin.
So, in today’s big match between RCB and Gujarat Titans, the winning side will book a place in the IPL final, while the losing side will remain alive in the tournament with another opportunity in Qualifier 2.
