Institutions must conduct regular fire safety awareness programmes for students and staff, preferably every quarter.
OSDMA orders fire safety audit in educational institutions: The Odisha government on Wednesday directed an immediate review and audit of fire preparedness in all educational institutions, coaching centers, and skill development hubs across the state.
The directive was issued by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority(OSDMA) in the wake of recent fire incidents in Lucknow which claimed 15 lives.
In a letter to all district collectors-cum-district disaster management authorities (DDMAs), OSDMA managing director and special relief commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil stressed the need for strict compliance with fire safety norms. ‘The safety of students, trainees, faculty members and support staff remains top priority said Patil.
With the new academic session underway, district authorities have been asked to conduct immediate field inspections to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Odisha Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Rules, 2017, the Odisha Fire Prevention and Fire Safety (Amendment) Rules, 2025, and other applicable regulations. The inspection teams were also asked to ensure that every institution introduces sufficient safe exits, displays distinct exit signage, and conducts regular hands-on fire extinguisher training and mock drills for students.
Apart from this, institutions must conduct regular fire safety awareness programmes for students and staff, preferably every quarter. Periodic mock drills will be carried out in coordination with Fire Services and local authorities. Each institution must designate trained Fire Safety Wardens and Nodal Officers.
