Emergency earthquake alert declared in Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures located on the southern island of Kyushu.
7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan: A severe earthquake hit Japan on Tuesday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 7.1 on the Richter Scale. The agency has also issued a tsunami warning.
According to JMA waves of about 3.28 feet are expected to rise in the sea. People living in coastal areas have been advised to be cautious and go to safe places. The Japanese government has declared an emergency earthquake alert in Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures located on the southern island of Kyushu. This earthquake has been measured at maximum ‘Shindo 7’ on the Japanese Seismic Intensity Scale. This means that the tremors were so strong that it was difficult for people to stand.
The Japanese government and local administrations have suspended bullet train services on the Kyushu Shinkansen with immediate effect. Highways have been closed in the affected areas.
The administration is continuously monitoring the situation and people have been appealed to follow the official instructions.
