Italy’s ex-footballer Franco Baresi passes away at 66: World Cup winner Italy’s ex-footballer Franco Baresi passed away on Friday (July 31). He had been suffering from prolonged illness and said goodbye to the world at the age of 66. Barcelona’s club, AC Milan, one of football’s legendary defenders, confirmed his death in a statement.
‘The entire history of AC Milan is saddened by the death of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will always be in the club’s DNA, just like his famous number 6 jersey. AC Milan sends its condolences to Franco Baresi’s family at this difficult time,’ the club wrote in a statement.
Franco Baresi was a part of Italy’s World Cup-winning team in 1982. He played 81 international matches for Italy. Apart from this, his career was very long. He showed a great example of honesty while playing for the club AC Milan. Franco joined AC Milan’s youth academy in 1974. After this, in 1978, he made his debut for the senior team. He played for AC Milan for about 19 years. Franco played a total of 719 matches for the club, making him the second most-capped player for the club. The club also retired the number 6 jersey in his honour. The Italian won six Serie A titles and three European Cup/Champions League titles for the club.
Franco Baresi’s team, who won the World Cup title once, reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. After this, under his captaincy, the team made it to the 1994 World Cup final. The team had to face defeat in the penalty shootout against Brazil.
