Olympian Sushil Kumar’s Bail Plea Rejected By Delhi High Court: Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar suffered a major setback from the Delhi High Court. The court has refused to grant him bail during a hearing on Tuesday. Sushil Kumar was accused in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankhar and is currently behind bars in connection with the case.
Justice Purushaindra Kumar on August 6, dismissed Kumar’s bail plea citing concerns raised by the Supreme Court. The court cited the seriousness of the case, influencing witnesses, the gravity of the offense and his capacity to influence the ongoing trial process as main reasons for not granting bail. The judge noted that generally bail is the rule and jail is the exception, but in this case the crime was premeditated and the assault was brutal which resulted in death.
This is corroborated by the recovery of weapons, video evidence and many other pieces of evidence which are yet to be examined during the trial. The court said that the Supreme Court had revoked the previous bail on the ground that Sushil had considerable status and influence in the society, and had refused to testify whenever he was granted temporary release.
Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and on 19 July 2023, the sessions court granted him a week’s interim bail pending knee surgery. On August 13, 2025, the Supreme Court set aside the High Court’s order terminating Kumar’s bail in the case.
