Government to open onion godowns for public: Amid rising prices of onion in the country, the government has taken a major decision. The government will distribute its entire buffer stock of onions to the general public through the retail market. There is no official information about when the onions will be available in the market.
However, speculations arise that from mid-August or early September onions can be sold directly to consumers at subsidized rates through the outlets and mobile vans of NAFED and NCCF. Interestingly, the government has procured only 15,000 tonnes of onions against its target of 2 lakh tonnes. For the past two years, the government used to sell buffer stocks of onions in both wholesale markets and retail markets to control prices. However, this time the strategy has changed due to limited buffer stock. The government believes that by releasing onion in wholesale markets, middlemen and big traders can take advantage of it, so it will be sold directly to retail.
According to a report, the government can release about 800 tons of onions in the market daily and sell onions at subsidized rates for 125 days. Through this, it will try to keep the prices under control until the kharif harvest.
