John Ternus steps in as Apple’s new CEO: John Ternus takes over as Apple’s new CEO on Tuesday. He succeeded Tim Cook after his 15-year long tenure. Ternus has become the third CEO to lead Apple in the modern era after Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.
51 years Ternus assumes charge as new CEO of Apple on 1 September 2026. He has been associated with the tech giant for the last 25 years. Recently he was heading the hardware engineering operations. John Patrick Ternus studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1997. Before joining Apple, he worked at Virtual Research Systems, where he worked on virtual reality hardware and display technology.
He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001. Initially, he worked on Apple’s Cinema Display and gradually took on major engineering responsibilities at the company. The team of Ternus has worked on different generations of products including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. His team has also worked on the redesigned iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air and MacBook Neo. He was also involved in Apple’s transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon, which is considered one of the biggest technology changes in the company’s recent history.
Although Tim Cook has left the post of CEO, he has not separated from Apple. Now he will play the role of executive chairman. According to Apple, Cook will continue to help the company with some important tasks under his new role. He took charge of Apple in 2011. At the time of announcing his resignation as CEO, Tim Cook praised John Ternus, describing him as an engineer’s mind, an innovator’s mind and a leader with integrity. Apple’s board has also expressed confidence in his experience.
