India’s UPI and DPI Gain Global Momentum at BRICS 2026
BRICS 2026: UPI Live in 8 Countries, India Signs DPI MoUs With 23 Nations: India’s digital transformation is increasingly gaining international recognition, with the country showcasing the global potential of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) model at the BRICS Summit 2026.
UPI, which has emerged as a major pillar of India’s digital payments ecosystem, is already operational in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius and Qatar. Its expanding international footprint is enabling quicker and more convenient digital transactions and remittances, while also strengthening India’s position as a global fintech leader.
Alongside UPI, India is promoting its broader India Stack and DPI framework as a model that other nations can adapt to their own development needs. The Indian government has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 23 countries to facilitate cooperation and knowledge-sharing in the field of digital public infrastructure.
The countries involved are Armenia, Sierra Leone, Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad and Tobago, Tanzania, Kenya, Cuba, Colombia, Laos, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Gambia, Fiji, Guyana, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Lesotho, Maldives and Mongolia.
These collaborations allow partner countries to explore solutions in areas such as digital identity, payments and citizen-oriented digital public services. By sharing its experience, India is positioning DPI not merely as a domestic success story but as a potential tool for accelerating inclusive and technology-driven development across the Global South.
The focus on UPI and DPI at BRICS 2026 therefore reflects a broader Indian vision: using digital technology to deepen economic cooperation, simplify cross-border transactions, expand financial inclusion and build stronger connections among developing economies.
