Onion prices fall up to 9% ahead of festive season: Consumers got a major relief as onion prices declined ahead of festive season. The increased supply of onions in the mandi is the key reason behind this. The government has significantly helped to reduce prices by releasing onions from its buffer stock.
The government says onion availability is satisfactory and the supply is expected to improve further in the coming months. According to government data, the all-India average model price of onion fell by 9.1% between September 2 and September 11, from Rs 3,721 per quintal to Rs 3,383 per quintal.
Onion is being sold at the rate of Rs 35 per kg in mobile vans and retail shops through government agencies like NCCF and NAFED. Notably, special ‘Kanda Express’ trains and road transports are being used to expedite supply rapidly in the high consumption cities. About 9,200 metric tons of onions have been shipped so far. The arrival of onions in the markets has also been higher than last year. Between April 2 and September 11, approximately 85.06 lakh metric tons (LMT) of onion has been supplied to markets across the country. This is 3.14% higher than 82.48 LMT in the same period last year.
In major onion-producing states like Maharashtra, the average market price during this period fell from Rs 4,011 per quintal to Rs 3,842 per quintal, a decline of about 4.2%. The government also says that the availability of onion in the country is still in good condition. Production of Kharif and late-Kharif crops is expected to be good, which may increase the supply in the coming months.
Onion prices are expected to drop by Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg in the next 1 to 2 weeks. As harvesting of the new kharif crop has been delayed by about 3-4 weeks in producing states like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh due to heavy rains this year.
