UP Bus Fire: 9 people died, PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia: At least 9 people died after a passenger bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida on Wednesday night. The absconding driver and conductor have been arrested. President Droupadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and other prominent leaders expressed condolences over the accident.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 pm Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida. A bus was carrying around 30 to 35 passengers from Delhi to Mahoba. According to the complaint, passengers began noticing a burning smell from the driver’s cabin. They allegedly informed the driver and conductor about it but the bus did not stopped. The driver and conductor said such smell was common in the bus. After a short while, flames suddenly erupted near driver’s seat and rapidly spread through the vehicle. Passengers raised alarm to stop the bus but the driver failed to act immediately. The fire intensified and smoke filled the passenger compartment, leaving several people trapped inside. Few others managed to escape by jumping out of the bus.
A fire department team reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and brought the blaze under control. The injured passengers were rushed to nearest hospital where doctors declared 9 people dead.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the family of the nine people who died, while Rs 50,000 will be provided to each injured person.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for those injured in the incident.
Police have registered a case based on the complaint and initiated an investigation. The identities of the deceased and the exact cause of the fire are yet to be ascertained.
