Awadhesh Narayan Singh resigns as chairman of Bihar Legislative Council: Bihar Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh has resigned from the post, triggering discussions over the distribution of key constitutional positions between the ruling BJP and JD(U). He submitted his resignation to the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council on Monday (September 28, 2026).
According to reports, the Legislative Council chairman’s post may go to the JD(U), with incumbent Deputy Chairman Prof Dr Ramvachan Rai emerging as a leading contender. Rai was elected unopposed as deputy chairman in July 2024 and has been associated with the Legislative Council for several years. He may initially take charge as acting chairman, pending the formal process for selecting a new chairman.
Awadhesh Narayan Singh has been associated with the post of Chairman of the Legislative Council for a long time. He first served as Chairman from 8 August 2012 to 8 May 2017. After this, he assumed the responsibility of the Executive Chairman from 16 June 2020 to 25 August 2022. He was the executive chairman for the third time from 21 June 2024 to 23 July 2024. After this, he held the responsibility as chairman from 23 July 2024 till the date of his resignation i.e., 28 September 2026.
