MSP of wheat increased by Rs 25 per quintal: Good news for farmers across the country. The central government has approved an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat by ₹25 per quintal. The objective of this decision is to give farmers a better price for their crops and ensure adequate margin on production costs.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Wednesday said that the production cost of wheat is around ₹1,264 per quintal. The wheat MSP for the 2027-28 rabi marketing season has been increased to ₹2,610 per quintal. Earlier, the MSP for wheat in 2026-27 was ₹2,585 per quintal. That is, the MSP of wheat is more than double the cost of production. Wheat is the major rabi crop of the country. Its sowing usually starts from October, while its harvesting starts from April. In such a situation, the announcement of new MSP is considered important for the farmers.
The government has increased the MSP of wheat as well as five other rabi crops. Barley MSP has been increased from ₹2,150 to ₹2,286 per quintal. In pulses, gram MSP has been increased from ₹5,875 to ₹5,958 and lentil MSP has been increased from ₹7,000 to ₹7,390 per quintal. At the same time, among oilseed crops, the MSP of mustard has been increased from ₹6,200 to ₹6,613 and the MSP of safflower has been increased from ₹6,540 to ₹7,215 per quintal.
According to government estimates, a total of ₹90,962 crore will be paid to farmers for procurement of around 324 lakh tonnes of rabi crops in the 2027-28 marketing season.
