BJP’s Debashish Sharma won Nagaon bypoll by over 1.42 lakh votes: BJP candidate Debashish Sharma has won the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. He secured 7,14,349 votes, accounting for around 50% of the total vote share. Sharma defeated his nearest rival AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal by 1,42,224 votes, the election commission said.
The Binnakandi legislator Ajmal secured 5,72,125 votes. Former congress MLA Sibamoni Bora finished third with 1,29,492 votes. The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi, necessitating a by-election. Before Bordoloi, the BJP’s Rajen Gohain had held the seat for four consecutive terms, from 1999 to 2019. The results also indicated a partial revival of the AIUDF in Bengali Muslim-majority areas.

The Nagaon constituency has 19.05 lakh registered electors, which includes 9.43 lakh women and 50 third-gender voters, who voted across 2,312 polling stations. The bypoll, held on October 6, recorded a voter turnout of 76.19 per cent.
