The work of finalizing the budget document for the financial year 2025-26 has begun. So, the question arises: Who prepared India’s first budget, and who gave the longest budget speech?
- After the 1857 rebellion, many changes took place in the governance of India. The British Crown took over the responsibility of the Indian administration from the East India Company. After the administration of India came under the complete control of Queen Victoria of Britain, James Wilson prepared the first budget of India on 7 April 1860.
- R.K. Shanmugam Chetty prepared the first budget in independent India on 26 November 1947.
- Indira Gandhi was the first woman to present the budget. She presented the budget for the financial year 1970-71.
- While a Rajya Sabha member, she presented the budget for the financial year 1982-83.
- Morarji Desai presented the most budgets as the finance minister. He presented the full budget 8 times and the interim budget 2 times.
