List of Chief Ministers of Odisha and their tenure
List of Chief Ministers of Odisha The state of Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, is located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by Jharkhand to the north and West Bengal to the northeast, the Bay of Bengal to the east, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to the south, and the state of Chhattisgarh to the west. Before India’s independence in 1947, the capital of Odisha was in Cuttack.
While the current capitol was later built in Bhubaneswar in the vicinity of the city’s historic temples in the east-central coastal plains. After which the name of the state was officially changed from Orissa to Odisha in late 2011.Indeed, the modern state of Odisha was established as a province of India on 1 April 1936 at the Kanika Palace, Cuttack, and consists mainly of Odia-speaking people. Hence, 1 April is celebrated as Utkala Divas (Odisha Day).
Odisha has a chequered history of monarchical rule of various dynasties and assimilation of Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu cultures. It was also a major maritime kingdom and had strong trade alliances with most of the ports in the Bay of Bengal.Noteworthy: Odisha is the ninth largest state in India by area and the eleventh largest by population. Odia is the official and most widely spoken language, with 93.33% Odia speakers according to the linguistic survey. Odisha has a relatively uneven coastline (about 480 km long) and lacks good ports, except for the deep-water facility at Paradip.
Since 1946, Odisha has seen 15 Chief Ministers, starting from April 1946 to currently serving Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who took oath on June 12, 2024. Prior to Majhi, as the new CM, BJD leader Naveen Patnaik, who had led the party for 24 years, was the longest-serving Chief Minister since March 2000, ending the 24-year term. Here is the complete list of Chief Minsters of Odisha.
