Voter Card To Be Linked With Aadhaar, Decision To Be Taken Soon
Aadhaar card to be linked with voter ID card, says ECI: On Tuesday, the Election Commission held a meeting with the CEO of UIDAI, the Union Home Secretary, and other officials regarding linking voter ID with the Aadhaar card. It was decided in this meeting how the EPIC number of the voter card can be connected to Aadhaar across the country without violating the orders of the Supreme Court. For this, there was talk of taking a technical consultation among experts. Work for which will be started soon.
Important meeting of the Election Commission-Home Ministry:
The Election Commission said that only after technical advice will it be known how the voter card number can be connected with Aadhaar. This important meeting was held on Tuesday in the Nirvachan Sadan with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on behalf of the Commission.
Discussion on linking the voter card with Aadhaar:
Union Home Secretary, Secretary, Legislative Department, Secretary MeitY, and CEO of UIDAI, besides technical experts of the Commission, participated in it. The Commission said that, according to Article 326 of the Constitution of India, the right to vote can be given only to a citizen of India.
Know what the Election Commission said:
According to the Commission, the Aadhaar card merely serves to identify an individual. Therefore, it has been determined that such linking of the voter ID number (EPIC) with Aadhaar will take place only in accordance with the provisions of Article 326 of the Constitution, Sections 23(4), 23(5), and 23(6) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and WP (Civil) No. 177/2023 of the Supreme Court.
