NSA Ajit Doval to visit China, special meeting after 5 years

India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is likely to visit China soon for Special Representative talks

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is likely to visit China in the next few weeks. He will lead the Indian delegation in the new edition of the Special Representative (SR) Dialogue on Border Issues. The previous SR Dialogue was held in New Delhi in December 2019. The resumption of the Dialogue was decided during the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23.

According to sources, NSA Doval is likely to travel to China soon to attend the SR meeting. The SR meeting is likely to be held by the end of this month or early January. However, there is no official word yet on where the SR meeting will be held. India and China had discussed the SR meeting in their diplomatic meeting on December 5. NSA Doval will go as the special representative for this meeting from India. On the other hand, Foreign Minister Bang Yi will participate in the meeting from China.

The SR talks have not been held in the last five years due to the border dispute in Eastern Ladakh. The military standoff between India and China in Eastern Ladakh took place in May 2020. However, tensions arose between the two countries after the military clash in Galwan Valley in June 2020. The ceasefire agreement ended with the completion of the withdrawal of troops from Depsang and Demchok. The troop withdrawal agreement was finalized on October 21.
