Cyclone ‘Alfred’: Australian authorities have ordered the evacuation of people
Cyclone ‘Alfred’: Government orders evacuation of people: In anticipation of Cyclone Alfred, which is expected to bring strong winds, waves, and a lot of rain, thousands of people were forced to leave eastern Australia on Saturday. Flights were canceled, and power outages were also expected.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Alfred’s slow approach to the coast is concerning since it is expected to produce heavy rains over a long period and is a Category 2 storm. The storm is expected to make landfall north of Brisbane, the third-largest city in Australia.
Over 80,000 homes in the two states, half of which were on the Gold Coast, had their electricity turned off, according to power companies.
Previous Tropical Cyclone Dramatic footage and photographs capture the destruction left behind by Alfred, which has ravaged parts of southeast Queensland.
While specialists believe the worst is yet to come, the weather system was downgraded to a tropical low on Saturday morning and remains off the mainland close to Bribie Island at early afternoon.
The Bureau’s latest advice is that the system is drifting slowly northwest and is expected to move along the mainland coast later on Saturday between Maroochydore and Bribie Island.
All of the emergency alerts in southeast Queensland have been reduced to “watch and act” levels, authorities said.
The tropical low is expected to move inland within the next 12 to 24 hours, carrying with it torrential rain that may be deadly in its flood potential.
There are 20,000 residents under evacuation orders in northern New South Wales, where there are 40 emergency warnings for flooding and heavy rain.
In the past day, the SES has made thirty flood rescues.
Close to its center, the low is holding at 55 km/h with gusts up to 85 km/h.
As the system moves inland, winds are expected to continue to decrease, but heavy rain is expected to continue over northern NSW and southeast Queensland.
