What is spacewalk? Sunita Williams to perform spacewalk in space: An Indian-origin American astronaut named Sunita Williams and her partner Butch Wilmore are in space for over 200 days. It’s now announced that Sunita Williams of Indian origin has decided to move out of this space station; she will conduct a walk outside in space. Do you know what a spacewalk is and at what time or under what circumstance it is undertaken?

Since June, Sunita Williams and her companion Butch Wilmore have been floating in space. She has seen postponements time and again on returning to the Earth due to mechanical faults in her spacecraft. Sunita Williams and her partner celebrated Christmas and New Year in space just a few days back. The photographs of the event have been released by NASA on its social networking site.

NASA will perform a spacewalk to the International Space Station on January 16 and 23, which is divided into two phases. NASA will conduct its first spacewalk on January 16. During this Sunita Williams will replace the Rat Gyro Assembly of the space station along with astronaut Nick Hague and will repair a damaged part of the light filter for the X-ray telescope. This will start at 05:30 PM.

Moreover, the second spacewalk of NASA will be performed on January 23. During this the astronauts will take away the radio antenna from the space station and collect samples of microbial analysis from the surface. The motive behind this is that it will check for ground composition to observe whether there are any microorganisms in them. You probably know that this spacewalk will begin at 05:30 PM and will take about 6.5 hours.

NASA, the American space agency defines a spacewalk as when an astronaut steps out of a vehicle in space. Technically, a spacewalk is called EVA. So EVA stands for Extravehicular Activity.

Astronauts do not perform spacewalks without their protective spacesuits. Moreover, water is also there to drink to quench one’s thirst. They wore spacesuits for a few hours before stepping steps out of a vehicle in space. Spacesuits are also pressurized, which means that they have oxygen; therefore, astronauts breathe pure oxygen before going out of the spacecraft, and this removes all the nitrogen from their bodies. Nitrogen in the body presents problems while undertaking a spacewalk.
