Govt takes action, The Union government is planning to bring in the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2025, which will require parental or guardian permission for children below the age of 18 to open social media accounts. The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a draft rule notification in this regard.
Various stakeholders have been invited to give their views on this. Departmental Minister Ashwini Baishnab has informed us about this on his X account. The draft DPDP regulations are open for discussion, and everyone’s views have been invited, the Union Minister informed.
The public can submit their feedback and grievances through the mygov.in website between January 3 and February 18. A decision regarding these new rules will be taken only after February 18.
The government has laid down strict rules for personal data protection in the Digital Personal Data Protection Act or DPDP draft rule. It includes provisions such as user rights over personal data, the right to delete data, asking companies for a purpose while collecting personal data, and a fine of up to Rs 250 crore for data leaks. It was approved by Parliament in August 2023.
