Gyanesh Kumar Is The Next Chief Election Commissioner Of India: Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed the new Chief Election Commissioner. The term of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar ends today. Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed the 26th Chief Election Commissioner. He will hold the post until January 26, 2029. Gyanesh Kumar is a 1988 batch Kerala cadre IAS officer.

Who Is Gyanesh Kumar? Ex-cadre Officer of Kerala
- Retired as ministry of cooperation secretary in January 2022.
- Served as secretary in the Amit Shah ministry from May 2022.
- Spent five years in home ministry, initially as joint secretary between May 2016 and September 2018.
- Was in charge of Jammu & Kashmir desk while Article 370 was abrogated in August 2019.
- Appointed as election commissioner in March 2021.
- Holds a B-Tech in Business Finance and Civil Engineering from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India.
While the term of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar ends on February 18, Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed as the 26th CEC on February 17. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi finalized their names in a selection committee meeting held today and recommended them to the President. He will replace the outgoing Rajiv Kumar.
It is noteworthy that Gyanesh Kumar has served as Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Gyanesh Kumar retired as Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation under Amit Shah. While working in the Home Ministry, Kumar played a key role in setting up the ‘Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust’. When Article 370 was abrogated in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, he was in charge of the Jammu and Kashmir desk in the Home Ministry.
