What is a Gotra?
Before knowing the reasons for not marrying within the same gotra , let us first know what a gotra is. Astrology categorizes gotra since Vedic times. The seven sages of the gotra are Angiras, Atri, Gautama, Kashyap, Bhrigu, Vaishnava and Bharadwaj. According to Hinduism, marriage with a member of the same gotra is prohibited because having the same gotra creates a relationship between two individuals who become a boy and girl brother and sister; thus, they cannot be a husband and wife.
Our ancestors also resemble because of the same gotra. In Hinduism, people of the same gotra are also regarded as close relatives. Therefore, ancient people forbade marriages within the same gotra.
