Historical Auction: Indian Currency 100 Note Sold for ₹56 Lakh
Historical Auction, In a unique auction held recently in London, the Indian 100 rupee note was in the headlines. This note is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that the note was sold for a huge price. India’s historic ‘Hajj note’ was sold for Rs 56,49,650 at an auction held in London recently. In the 1950s, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a 100-rupee Indian note as a ‘Hajj note.’ The serial number of this note is ‘HA 078400.’ This note was issued at that time especially for pilgrims going to Gulf countries for Hajj. This special note was issued by the RBI with the aim of stopping illegal gold purchases.
This historic note has the prefix ‘HA,’ which makes it clear that it is a special ‘Hajj note’ issued by the RBI. However, while the use of this ‘Hajj note’ was not legal in India, it was used in Gulf countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman at that time. After Kuwait issued its own currency in 1962, the ‘Hajj note’ ceased to be in circulation in the 1970s.
Currently, there is a huge demand for ‘Hajj notes’ among coin collectors. Since they carry historical significance, these notes are not only important from an economic point of view but also from a cultural point of view. That is why these notes were sold for such a high price, experts said. Similarly, two rare old Indian notes of Rs 10 were also sold at the said auction. Out of them, one of the 10-rupee notes was sold for Rs 6.90 lakh and the other for Rs 5.89 lakh. Both the notes were issued on May 25, 1918. The historical significance of the said two notes was revealed in the latter half of the First World War.
