The first two editions were held in Kenya and Bangladesh. However, due to its success, the tournament was later held in major cricketing nations like England and India.

The format was changed for the 2009 edition to feature only the top 8 teams in the ICC ODI rankings. The ranking cutoff was set 6 months before the trophy began.
