This magnificent fair was started by Shankaracharya. According to some people, the Kumbh Mela started after the churning of the ocean. According to scholars, the tradition of the Kumbh is thousands of years old. Historical references to the Mahakumbh can also be found in ancient texts. There is evidence of a Buddhist inscription from 600 BC describing the presence of a fair held on the banks of the river.
However, the location of the Kumbh Mela is determined based on astrological calculations. Astrologers and chief saints come together to determine the location. Astrologers observe the positions of Jupiter and the Sun to determine the location. “The Mahakumbh Mela of Astha begins in Prayagraj, a special event that has taken place once in 144 years.”
It is said that the Mahakumbh was organized due to a dispute over nectar during the churning of the ocean. According to the mythological story, there was a war between the gods and the demons. In this war, the gods were defeated miserably by the demons. After the defeat, the gods could not bear the cruelty of the demons and finally took refuge in Lord Vishnu. And the churning of the ocean was done on the advice of Vishnu. During the churning of the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot, and there was another fight between the gods and the demons for that nectar pot. At the behest of Lord Krishna, Jayanta, the son of the king of gods, Indra, was leaving with the nectar pot.
But after knowing about this, the demons followed Jayanta. A fierce battle took place between the gods and the demons for twelve days to get the nectar pot. In this battle, the gods like Saturn, Moon, and Sun protected the nectar pot. Therefore, the Kumbh Mela is organized by looking at the connection between the positions of these planets and the current zodiac sign. It is believed that one day of the gods is equal to twelve years of a human being. During the war, some drops of nectar fell from the pot. The Kumbh Mela is organized at the place where the nectar pot fell. It is believed that drops of nectar fell in places like Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
