Dr. Manmohan Singh’s political journey began in Assam. Although he was not originally from Assam, he had to live in a rented house in Assam from 1991 to 2019. Manmohan had rented a two-room house from the then Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia. House number 3989 in Nandan Nagar, Sarumatriya, Guwahati had become Manmohan’s temporary address for a long time. There was no obstacle in Manmohan’s journey to the Rajya Sabha as the court had earlier ruled that if a person is elected to the Rajya Sabha from a state, then he does not need to have his own house in that state. Several Congress leaders from Assam had then approached the court to oppose Manmohan’s Rajya Sabha membership. They complained about how Manmohan Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha when he did not own or rent a house in Assam. However, the court’s verdict went in Manmohan Singh’s favor.
