Canada’s Liberal Party chooses Mark Carney as 24th prime minister
Mark Carney will be the new Prime Minister of Canada: Mark Carney will be Canada’s new Prime Minister. Mark Carney was elected as leader of the Liberal Party on a vote of 86%. He is the 24th prime minister. Mark Carney will succeed Justin Trudeau. Justin Trudeau resigned in January.
With the defeat of Chrystia Freeland in Sunday’s Liberal Party leadership vote, former politician-turned-central banker Mark Carney is expected to be Canada’s new prime minister following Justin Trudeau. Early this week, he is expected to assume office.

Carney, 59, whose life is replete with decades of experience in working at the top of the world economy, has never been voted into public office. Now, as prime minister, Mark Carney has been elected in a landslide. With 131,674 votes, he polled 86% of the vote and was elected Liberal Party leader. Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s former finance minister, polled 11,134 votes to come second.
Who Is Mark Carney?
Mr. Carney, a 59-year-old ex-Goldman Sachs executive, has been United Nations special envoy for climate action and finance since 2020. He has also headed the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. Carney is a citizen of Canada, the U.K., and Ireland, but prefers to hold just Canadian citizenship. He has four daughters and is married to Diana, a British-born woman. His prospects of staying on as Prime Minister are looking up, with the Liberals 34% behind the Conservatives in a recent opinion poll.
