Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake: Death Toll rises 1644: The death toll in Myanmar’s Friday earthquake has reached 1644. Myanmar’s junta army on Saturday night confirmed 1,644 fatalities on state television. The government reported 1002 fatalities in the afternoon, and within a few hours, the number of deaths was stated as 1,644. This indicates the extent of damage due to the earthquake in Myanmar. Relief operations continue in most areas in Myanmar and Thailand. In such a case, the death toll is bound to rise.
Key things after the Myanmar earthquake-
1 – Myanmar’s military regime has reported that 1644 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the earthquake and the injured have risen to 3,408. The number of missing persons has increased to 139. The Myanmar earthquake intensity was 7.7. Then there was an aftershock of 6.7 intensity.
2 – Myanmar experienced an earthquake once again at around 3:30 pm in the afternoon on Saturday.The intensity of this earthquake was rated 5.1 on the Richter scale. Three earthquakes have hit Myanmar within two days. Their intensity on the Richter scale was above 7, 6 and 5.
3 – Myanmar’s Mandalay city has suffered extremely due to the earthquake. 17 lakhs of people are the inhabitants of this city. Most of the buildings of the city are ruined. Huge number of citizens in the city suffered due to the earthquake and a shortage of rescuers too is present.
4 – Over 694 individuals have lost their lives in Mandalay, the city nearest to the earthquake’s epicenter. 94 individuals have lost their lives in the capital Naypyidaw so far. These two Myanmar cities are worst hit by the earthquake.
5 – Life in Myanmar has taken a halt following the earthquake. Many people are waiting for aid. Traffic is severely hit as there are cracks on roads. There is a long queue of trucks and buses outside the capital.
6 – Myanmar’s ruling junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has called for foreign assistance. This is not usual for Myanmar as past administrations have shunned foreign aid even after disasters.
7 – Hands have been raised to assist Myanmar from the entire world. America, Russia, Malaysia and Singapore have come forward to send relief goods and staff to Myanmar. Humanitarian assistance worth 2 million dollars has been provided by South Korea to Myanmar.
8 – India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has stated that a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital Unit has arrived in Myanmar. This team will assist in rendering first aid and emergency medical treatment in Mandalay city.
9 – 40 tonnes of relief material has been dispatched to Myanmar from Indian warships INS Satpura and INS Savitri.On India’s part, a team of 80 staff members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also left for Myanmar on Saturday.
10 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also phoned Myanmar’s military government’s leader Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday.He stated that as a neighboring country, India stands with the people of Myanmar during this crisis.
11 – It has been predicted by aid agencies that Myanmar isn’t equipped to handle such a tragedy. Already, 35 lakh citizens are displaced as the country has suffered a civil war. In all this, things have gone downhill further after an earthquake hit.
12 – Tremors of the earthquake have also been experienced in Bangkok, the capital of Myanmar’s neighboring country Thailand. 9 people have been killed as a result of the earthquake in Thailand. 100 workers have gone missing after the collapse of the building in Bangkok.
