Death toll rises in stampede at Delhi railway station: Rs 10 lakh compensation to kin of dead

Saturday night saw a massive rush at the Delhi capital railway station. New Delhi railway station saw people going to the Kumbh Mela. A thick flow of people was at the New Delhi railway station due to the cancellation of the trains, thus creating traffic. 18 individuals were said to have been killed and 12 injured during the stampede.

The station population had increased because two special Delhi to Prayagraj Mahakumbh trains were held up. At around 10 pm, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims had gathered on platforms 14 and 15 waiting to board the train. Scores of passengers got crushed in the stampede and stampede. The injured were taken to the hospital, and 15 were declared dead by the doctors. Three others died later.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the tragedy. Modi tweeted on social media ‘X’, “I am deeply saddened by the stampede at New Delhi railway station. Condolences to those who have lost their dear ones. Speedy recovery to the injured. The authorities are giving all required help to the victims of this stampede,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

President Draupadi Murmu has expressed grief over the Delhi railway station incident. Besides feeling sad at the tragedy, Railway Minister Ashwini Baishnab ordered a high-level investigation.

The Railway Ministry has announced Compensation Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for the severely injured, and Rs 1 lakh for the less injured.
