Note auction ,Recently, the auction of a rare Indian 100 rupee ‘Haj note’ in London has attracted a lot of attention. This note, issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the 1950s, was specifically for Haj pilgrims traveling to Gulf countries. Its price in the auction was Rs 56,49,650, which shows its importance as a financial asset and a part of Indian history.
“RBI gave a big update: this many 2000-rupee notes were deposited, and data was shared till 31 December.” Haj notes are identified by their unique prefix ‘HA,’ which makes them different from other notes. These were of a different colour and were not legal tender in India. They were used in Gulf countries like UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.
These notes were discontinued in the 1970s, making them rare even today and increasing their popularity among collectors. The serial number of this Rs 100 note auctioned was HA 078400. Due to its historical importance and cultural heritage, it was the most liked note in the auction.
” Apart from the Haj note, two rare Rs 10 notes were also sold during the auction. One of these notes sold for Rs 6.90 lakh and is dated May 25, 1918. It has historical importance as it is associated with the British ship SS Shirala during the First World War. Another Rs 10 note sold for Rs 5.80 lakh is linked to the wreck of a ship that was attacked by a German U-boat during the same war.
These auctions reflect the growing interest in old Indian currency as collectibles. Collectors are attracted to such items due to their rarity and historical significance. The Haj notes are a reminder of India’s past efforts to facilitate pilgrimages for its citizens travelling abroad. The cultural and historical value of the Hajj note extends far beyond its economic value.
