Poonam Gupta appointed RBI deputy governor – The government has approved the appointment of Poonam Gupta, director general of the prestigious research institute National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three years.

The post of deputy governor at the RBI fell vacant after Michael Debabrata Patra stepped down in January. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Gupta’s appointment as deputy governor in the RBI for a period of three years from the date he assumes charge, sources said. Currently, Gupta is the Director General of NCAER. She is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and the convenor of the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission.

She joined NCAER in 2021 after spending nearly two decades in senior positions at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington. Gupta taught at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland (USA), and served as ‘visiting faculty’ at ISI (Indian Statistical Institute), Delhi. She has also been the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and Professor at ICRIER. Among all this, the most important news is that UPI payments will be discontinued.

Gupta holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in economics from the University of Maryland, USA and a Master’s degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.He won the Exim Bank Prize in 1998 for his PhD on international economics.
