RG Kar case: Sanjay Roy sentenced to life imprisonment

RG Kar case: The RG Kar Medical College case has shocked the entire country. A 31-year-old female trainee doctor was brutally murdered by a man named Sanjay Roy, who was working as a volunteer police officer outside the hospital.

For a long time, the doctors’ strike movement was seen all over the country regarding the incident. Starting from the Supreme Court, the High Court also expressed concern about the horrific incident of rape and murder. Everyone demanded that the ruthless Sanjay Roy be sentenced to death. The CBI also demanded the death penalty for Sanjay, saying that the incident was rare to very rare. It also imposed a clause accordingly.

But the Sealdah court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment instead of the death penalty. He was also fined Rs 50,000. The court also directed the state government to provide financial assistance of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family. On January 18, the Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sealdah, convicted him.

Sanjay will now challenge the lower court’s verdict in the High Court and, if necessary, the Supreme Court. Similarly, the CBI can also go to the higher court to sentence Sanjay to death.

During the sentencing hearing today, the CBI demanded that Sanjay be sentenced to death. However, Sealdah Court Judge Justice Anarvan Das did not accept this. The CBI had described the RG tax case as a rare to very rare case. But Justice Das said, “This is not a rare to very rare case at all. Therefore, I am sentencing you to death or only imprisonment.” Sanjay was not sentenced to death as the court did not consider the case to be a rare to very rare case.

Sanjay Roy, who was convicted on Saturday, once again told the court that he was innocent. Sanjay had defended himself by saying, “I am being framed without any reason. I have already told you that I always wear Rudraksha. If I had committed a crime, it would have torn there. I was not allowed to present my case. They have forcibly taken my signature on several documents. Sir, you have seen everything. I have done this before too.” Sanjay’s argument did not have any effect on the court.

A case was registered against Sanjay Roy under Section 64, Section 66, and Section 103-1 of the Indian Penal Code. The maximum punishment for Section 64 is life imprisonment, while the maximum punishment for Section 66 is life imprisonment or the death penalty, and the maximum punishment for Section 103(1) is life imprisonment or the death penalty. However, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

This tragic incident happened in the month of August 2024. Which created a stir across the country. On August 9, the body of a trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Voices were raised across the country to get justice for him. Especially the protest of junior doctors of that medical college and hospital shocked the West Bengal government. The government there handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI.

During the investigation, the CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh, former chairman of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI also arrested a local police officer along with him. They were accused of destroying evidence. However, they were later granted bail. But Sandeep Ghosh is in jail in another case related to financial irregularities in the medical college.
