The meaning of calling Shamba Dashami the last festival of the lunar year is that after that, there will be no more such festivals of Pintapana for about six months until the new moon of Chitalagi. There is a true demonstration of the delicious, sweet, and satisfying food preparation skills of Odias – ‘On Shamba Dashami, one person gets one Pitha.’ In the agriculturally dominant state of Odisha, this time is the time of abundance of vegetables. The curry prepared at this festival with various vegetables is called “Ghadaghada Tiyan”. The highlight of this festival is the Ghant curry Ghadha Tiyan.
Mothers celebrate the festival of Sambadashami with great devotion, wishing for the well-being of their children. The specialty of this festival is that three types of incense or puja are performed at home, observing the three positions of the sun in the sky. The first incense is offered at dawn. Hindu women, being completely pure, offer offerings of fruits and sweets at this time. At this Brahma Muhurta, the first incense is offered and Surya Purana is recited. At noon, the second incense is offered to the sun, the bright sun . This is the main incense of the Sambadashami. It is eaten with gointha, atakali, various types of pitha , khechudi, ghadaghada tiana etc. The last incense or third incense is offered to the sun god who is in the evening.
