The accident took place on Calangute Beach in Goa. A passenger boat capsized in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday during Christmas celebrations here. The accident occurred at 2 pm. According to a senior police officer, a 54-year-old man died in the accident. Twenty others were rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Except for two passengers, none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. The passengers on the boat included a six-year-old child and a woman, police officials said.
The passengers on the boat included 13 members of a family from the Khed region of Maharashtra. According to officials, a Drashti Marine employee, who saw the boat sinking, ran to help and called for backup. A spokesperson for the government-appointed lifeboat agency Drishti Marine said that immediately after the incident, 18 lifeboats on duty assisted the struggling passengers and brought them to safety on shore.
