The violence that started at 7:30 p.m. on Monday built near Chitnis Park of the Mahal area involved the rampaging mob hurling stones at the police and setting fire to several vehicles. Subsequently, riots broke out in the Hanspuri area between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. According to Nagpur Police, 25 to 30 policemen were injured in this violence, while 60-65 people have been detained.

This controversy erupted over the demand to remove Aurangzeb’s grave. In addition, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) threatened to demolish it. Earlier Nagpur had seen protests. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had recently spoken about demolishing Aurangzeb’s tomb. Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi called Aurangzeb a good king, which aggravated the controversy.

Curfew and security arrangements:

Following the violence, a curfew has been imposed in several areas of Nagpur—Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Shakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar and Kapilnagar. Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) has been imposed, under which leaving the house without any urgent work is not allowed. Medical emergencies, government employees, and students appearing for exams are exempted.

Police action:

Nagpur Police described the violence as a result of rumors and said that the situation is now under control. Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singhal said that CCTV footage is being scanned to identify the miscreants. At present, heavy police force is deployed in the affected areas, and efforts are on to normalize the situation.
