Indian Railways Job Categories:
There are different categories for working in the Railways: A, B, C and D. All the posts in the Railways are divided into these categories. Let us know about these categories:
- Group A Category:
Group A posts are placed in the officer category. Most of the recruitment in this category is done through the Civil Service. Recruitment for other posts in this category is done through the Engineering Services Examination and Combined Medical Examination.

Recruitment to the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers is also done through the UPSC Special Class Railway Apprentice Examination.
2. Railway Catagory Group B:
Group B officers are recruited through promotion from Group C. Group B posts in the Railways are also in the officer category. Some posts are selected through UPSC and the rest are filled through promotion. Group A and Group B posts in Indian Railways are gazetted.
- Group C Category:
The RRBs conduct the recruitment of Group C for C MBs under the Railway recruitment Control Board (RRCB). The recruitment agencies of zonal Railways are the Production Units. In this, applications for various Group C posts are made through technical and non-technical examinations.
- Group C technical services include:
Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Signal and Communication Department etc.
- Non-Mechanical Services include:
Clerk, Assistant Station Master, Ticket Collector etc. Selected candidates are recommended to Zonal Railways and temporary appointments are made from the Zonal Railway Headquarters.
- Group C includes the following posts:
Assistant Station Master, Guard, Clerk, Ticket Collector, Traffic Instructor, Stenographer, etc. These posts are also called subordinate posts.
- Group D Category:
Recruitment for Group D is done at the departmental level. It can also be done by the Zonal Railway Headquarters.
- Posts under Group D:
Gateman, Helper, Khalasi, Trolleyman, Trackman, Hospital Attendant, Pointman, Assistant Pointman, Porter. Group C and Group D posts in Indian Railways are non-gazetted.
5. Information about salaries and positions in Indian Railways
Employees in Indian Railways are divided into four groups, which have different salaries and positions. Group A includes higher positions like Manager and General Manager, whose salaries range from Rs 8700 to Rs 10,000.
- Group B comprises employees like the Chief Guard Master, Station Supervisor, whose salary ranges from Rs 4800 to Rs 7600.
- Group C consists of employees such as Junior Engineer, Loco Pilot, Train Ticket Examiner, Reservation Assistant, and Ticketing Clerk, whose salary ranges from Rs 2000 to Rs 4600.
- Group D consists of trackmen, helpers, and other support staff whose salaries range from Rs 1800 to Rs 1900.
