What is Belly landing gear-up ?

Belly landing gear-up is an emergency landing technique that involves an aeroplane landing without extending its landing gear. It is a last resort for pilots who are unable to deploy their landing gear owing to a technical or mechanical malfunction.

A belly landing or gear-up landing describes an occurrence in which aircraft land on their underside as their landing gear is completely retracted. The commonly used terminology of gear-up landing will describe incidents, which primarily refer to the mishap as the pilot neglects or forgets the extension of the landing gears. While the term bell landing relates to incidents primarily due to mechanical malfunctions, resulting in the pilot’s inability to extend the landing gears for landing the aircraft.

The outcome of most belly landings is heavy damage to the aeroplane. Belly landings leave an opportunity that when touching down hard, too rapidly, the aircraft can tip over and break up, or catch on fire. For a proper belly landing, extreme accuracy must be involved so the plane comes down as nearly level as possible but with sufficient velocity for it to remain controllable. Strong crosswinds, poor visibility, damage to the aeroplane, or unresponsive instruments or controls all increase the danger of attempting a belly landing. Belly landings are one of the most common types of aviation accidents but are rarely fatal if done properly.
