What is GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME or GBS Disease? In Maharastra, it spreads like the air. Alarm has been taken by the people due to rare neurological illness of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, or GBS. With each passing day, more and more number of people become its victim. Although this is a very rare disease but doctors are yet not able to know what may be the causative agent behind it. Nor is there specific medicine to ward off this disorder. Doctors do nothing but simply treat it.

There is no specific time frame given for the recovery of a person who suffers from such a disease. Sometimes, it takes as short a period as 7 days, and sometimes years. Many people in Pune have been affected by this rare neurological disease. Patients are increasing day by day, hence the Maharashtra Health Department has formed a team to find out why.

Doctors say bacterial or viral infections can eventually lead to GBS. It totally weakens one’s immune system. GBS may affect not only young children but also adults. However, it never becomes a pandemic. With proper treatment, a person can recover totally, doctors say.

What is GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME or GBS?

GBS is an extremely rare neurologic disorder. This disease assaults the nerves through weakening the body’s immune system. An infected person may be weak, get deaf, and sometimes even becomes paralyzed. It is not only rare, but no one knows what caused GBS.

According to the Mayo Clinic, most people with GBS have symptoms of an infection for at least six weeks. This infection later progresses into GBS and causes any kind of respiratory illness or gas. In addition to weakness, the first symptom of GBS appears in the feet. They spread throughout the body later on. It may cause problems in the legs, hands, face, and breathing muscles.

A patient with GBS may not be able to climb stairs or even walk. The second symptom is facial weakness followed by generalized weakness.

In GBS, signals might not be carried to the brain due to damage in nerves. Vision is disturbed because of GBS. Swallowing food is impossible. A patient suffering from GBS cannot speak or chew his food. He has very sharp pain in hands and feet. Pain intensifies at night. Heart rate accelerates without warning. Blood pressure accelerates. Digestive disorders arise.

There is no specific medicine for GBS, but some therapies have been identified that decrease the severity of symptoms.
