After the ruling BJP, if we talk about the opposition Congress, then they gave tickets to 41 women candidates, out of which 13 were successful in winning the elections. Whereas, in 2019, the Congress gave tickets to 52 women, out of which only 6 reached the Lok Sabha.

If we compare the last few Lok Sabha elections, then the number of women MPs has increased over time. In 1952, i.e., in the first Lok Sabha elections, only 12 women MPs were elected. This was about four and a half percent of the total number of MPs. In the general elections held a decade later, the proportion of women MPs increased to more than 6 percent. A decade later, in the 1971 general elections, it fell to less than four percent.

Since 1971, women’s representation in parliament has increased, albeit slowly. In the 1991 general election, 49 women MPs entered the lower house as MPs, but this figure was less than ten percent. In 2009, for the first time, women’s representation exceeded 10 percent. This was followed by 62 women MPs in 2014 and 78 in 2019. As of today, women MPs represent less than 14 percent of the Indian Parliament, much lower than South Africa’s 46 percent and the UK’s 35 percent.
